AKEA Company Culture
AKEA, Inc. originally began as a one-man operation and has grown into two separate companies that still share the same mission, vision, and values of our founder, Anthony J. "AJ" Kwan. As AJ is fond of saying, if we aren't having fun, we're doing it wrong.
AKEA strives to maintain an inclusive and small, family atmosphere within the organization. We celebrate birthdays, have "just because" cook-outs, and lunch together regularly. We support each other as individuals with a wide variety of talents including music, writing, performing, and other interests. We are also a close-knit group who care not only for each other, but for each other's families as well. Kids are always welcome, including the four-legged variety.
Teamwork and collaboration are twin pillars that allow us not only to serve our customers more efficiently, but offer learning opportunities and the chance to share new ideas, technologies, and approaches to projects. There are no "dull" projects here; as a full A/E construction firm, there are always a variety of different kinds of projects to work on. We aren't driven by recessions or typical construction-type financial ebbs and flows, we are driven by the desire to serve veterans, our community, and our country through our work on projects for the VA, local institutions of higher learning, and various government agencies.
We at AKEA are also able to take advantage of the opportunities presented by living in a wonderful community like Gainesville. Within the more urban setting of the University of Florida and Santa Fe College, as well as growing industry, you also have our beautiful natural surroundings and family-friendly environments. With a majority of staff being UF Gator alumni, we take pride in our local community and opportunities to serve it. We are graduates of the UF Mentor-Protege program, have acquired a CM contract with the City of Gainesville, and have completed several projects for the Alachua County School Board. We are also proud members of the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce. Our location also makes us centrally located for other projects in the Southeast and the Caribbean. Living and working in Gainesville offers a work/life balance unlike any other. One can visit amazing natural wonders as well as attending great sporting events, after all, this is SEC country.
The people are truly what makes working at AKEA unique. We value one another and strive to treat each other with respect and consideration. We support each other's hobbies and interests outside of work, and are an extended family of people who look out for one another. If you ask our employees, they will tell you that working at AKEA is a pleasure and allows for the experience of truly being treated like a valued member of a team. The overall atmosphere, combined with the people, make working at AKEA a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
